<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Today I felted a bag. I knitted a small bag out of wool yarn a few days ago. I put the wool bag in the washer this morning and let it agitate in hot water for some time. The original size was big enough at the opening to fit my head (yes, I tried it on :D). It was about twelve inches tall and eight inches across. Now, it's about seven by seven inches. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The bag is </span><i style="font-size: x-large;">very stiff.</i><span style="font-size: large;"> It's weird to have knitted something that is now so stiff and sturdy. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It can even stand up on its own! :D</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">As you can see, the bag was very hairy and fuzzy. It kind of reminded me of Sulley from Monsters Inc. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I have a problem though. That bit of yarn that you see? Yeah, that's the end of the skein. Already. :/ Usually I can make one skein of Patons sock yarn last for one sock. Oh well. I'm not about to rip it out, so I'll probably buy another skein. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">I'm also working on some new legwarmers that will actually fit this time around. They are going to be made from colorful leftover wooly yarns in a striped pattern. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It's good to be back on Blogger after so long. Thanks for sticking around and waiting for me to finally start posting again. :) Christmas break has been pretty good so far, even though it's hard to believe that Christmas is so close already. My unrealistic to-do list is much too long, and I'm having a hard time realizing that some things just aren't going to get done. :S Maybe that's a good thing, though. It forces me to take a step back and relax after being on full-speed during the semester.<br />Anyway...</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Last night my family spent the evening at my grandma's house. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Sometimes a skein of wool yarn is labelled "virgin wool," implying that the skein was made from the first shearing of a sheep. The first shearing is considered the best because it is the softest. <br /><br />If this is true and factual, then I ask you, what in the world is this?<br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">As some of you may remember, I wrote a post a while back featuring my Doctor Who inspired <a href="http://elaine-allthingsoldfashioned.blogspot.com/2012/03/encoded-scarves-are-best.html">scarf</a>. It was a great way to show off my fandom and was a lot of fun to make.<br /><br />For those of you who may not know, the Doctor travels around in his TARDIS, which is a time-travel space ship.<br />Essentially it looks like this:</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkgPh463aSbOZgbTauvN2LipnRAtq72JRum6VYdTkLdeY9b0m8i1djzn0cXc084W562bAwLTLr6xj1FoEe3bhu9R8Ub7hkAG-26sQzDX04iVt_Gl0fYvrjYjdnvdZcHonmkKkUNctKPoeG/s1600/TARDIS1+from+wikipedia.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkgPh463aSbOZgbTauvN2LipnRAtq72JRum6VYdTkLdeY9b0m8i1djzn0cXc084W562bAwLTLr6xj1FoEe3bhu9R8Ub7hkAG-26sQzDX04iVt_Gl0fYvrjYjdnvdZcHonmkKkUNctKPoeG/s1600/TARDIS1+from+wikipedia.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Picture from Wikipedia. That's credible, right?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The TARDIS is an iconic piece of "Doctor Who" for fans everywhere. It is instantly recognizable. </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRtqAtD8HSJfk-mD48y2hqxsxGFI2QPA5lBIkDwfxxGG0p_ze5Y_iUhzebt21FlqX_xm98KEQ9kfPnV0X7aGwrDwkYjIDLlLRuX_XVoQ3d-g1oi9qlG9g8gC5Ai3fAzRtLP4CJmd_ysNqM/s1600/Ten+and+TARDIS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRtqAtD8HSJfk-mD48y2hqxsxGFI2QPA5lBIkDwfxxGG0p_ze5Y_iUhzebt21FlqX_xm98KEQ9kfPnV0X7aGwrDwkYjIDLlLRuX_XVoQ3d-g1oi9qlG9g8gC5Ai3fAzRtLP4CJmd_ysNqM/s640/Ten+and+TARDIS.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I'm not sure where I got this. Oops. (I love the Tenth Doctor, by the way.)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The other day a wild idea popped into my head. "If I can't make a real TARDIS, why not make the closest thing to it?" I thought.<br />Yesterday saw the idea take form. Eight hours, three empty spools, and a broken needle later, I have this.<br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Quite possibly the Coolest Thing Ever Made.<br /><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It is made of twill fabric and is quilted in the design of the TARDIS's panels. <br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHRXsYShDfk8hLkH8MNQ3kMboYvm-oiIrrYU0thEVdXCCRWkCA9eWlowkzD6gqNFP-XtP6e7L79w3jSSq8sw4U3PjboEAYsJsUN0TL5fOhERmjQEIysTIVhXbQJouJh2WZZXn6Cu6uUEu/s1600/DSCN0563.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHRXsYShDfk8hLkH8MNQ3kMboYvm-oiIrrYU0thEVdXCCRWkCA9eWlowkzD6gqNFP-XtP6e7L79w3jSSq8sw4U3PjboEAYsJsUN0TL5fOhERmjQEIysTIVhXbQJouJh2WZZXn6Cu6uUEu/s640/DSCN0563.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I kept the design relatively simple. I didn't want to go overboard on the details; I just wanted the basic, instantly-recognizable look.<br /></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Some of you might remember my first post called <a href="http://elaine-allthingsoldfashioned.blogspot.com/2012/03/window-into-past.html">A Window Into the Past...</a> which described using vintage fabric as a sort of portal (not literally) into a specific time when the fabric was made. I have recently been messing around with this fabric once more. </span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOyt7BhclqEVf76d_rzRq0JM2FgkZ2l382OT2XYQIaDTszlkHaLvjcYl2bcK40Xc6s2LnSyA-f96Kdu6QE8Hxvgfn82r4F2BllrBkJ7fZvcgMZ4Q4wHvevF_BWLGJ1PrTg4dV7jvy0TM9-/s1600/DSCN0467.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOyt7BhclqEVf76d_rzRq0JM2FgkZ2l382OT2XYQIaDTszlkHaLvjcYl2bcK40Xc6s2LnSyA-f96Kdu6QE8Hxvgfn82r4F2BllrBkJ7fZvcgMZ4Q4wHvevF_BWLGJ1PrTg4dV7jvy0TM9-/s640/DSCN0467.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">About a week ago, I decided that my camera needed a new case. The old one was also handmade, but it was very much, shall we say, a prototype. Not very well done at all.<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4fbLieLFOMnnIgHxWOa7h2T9Ei8IR5M6JX10r9O4SaH8njIJA_T1jJMgIXNzoDIudrjYOH51X5SLxw3AKRN6jm_RI2VIRfPY5ogpEGFUH4gBkPirxvYprVt7eHhIimkZxMyaVBmvQGQq/s1600/DSCN0470.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4fbLieLFOMnnIgHxWOa7h2T9Ei8IR5M6JX10r9O4SaH8njIJA_T1jJMgIXNzoDIudrjYOH51X5SLxw3AKRN6jm_RI2VIRfPY5ogpEGFUH4gBkPirxvYprVt7eHhIimkZxMyaVBmvQGQq/s640/DSCN0470.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I decided that, like the previous case, this new-and-improved one should also be quilted.<br />I quilted it much more tightly so that it would look right. <br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgA5wUYAiyiu3_eNKJXykX_AW5kkFY6ILrVYh-_ca7xrFSQegxEPqB8BUIZ63QHlEsdf3qh3Ty1aBBdwVmoqgDDKPzhyEirunv0okmNCaGOMXCGdhQroydzQQYE2MxskF_CZu1SyhYZE3p/s1600/DSCN0475.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgA5wUYAiyiu3_eNKJXykX_AW5kkFY6ILrVYh-_ca7xrFSQegxEPqB8BUIZ63QHlEsdf3qh3Ty1aBBdwVmoqgDDKPzhyEirunv0okmNCaGOMXCGdhQroydzQQYE2MxskF_CZu1SyhYZE3p/s640/DSCN0475.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The new case was also meant to show off my knitting skills. <br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzIJwIiXjCEeeZOV3SvCWfGNUyDBh7bM8jG9u-HXaUsT6h-rgGi15cY1c9fdFFDrAW23b6TVWlVUU3suT0O-QGi6khaRGv6LWJes9jmB-MNiWnTacYxwtrjmDoxQtw6fIo8Cbsyfv9ioEm/s1600/DSCN0477.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzIJwIiXjCEeeZOV3SvCWfGNUyDBh7bM8jG9u-HXaUsT6h-rgGi15cY1c9fdFFDrAW23b6TVWlVUU3suT0O-QGi6khaRGv6LWJes9jmB-MNiWnTacYxwtrjmDoxQtw6fIo8Cbsyfv9ioEm/s640/DSCN0477.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I knitted a simple stockinette stitch sleeve and used a knitting spool to craft the wristband.<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYGNpJhxj3Bn5ofLCwaygalMvKJOVlJluymgeEn6Nb_OJ9maXBRwv3AUpM-48IgXa2nw9ar-_DMVf0kg68I68d8VnOSykxtOrrJJwHlZ-RaOEcSHD6BSEXwSAZX2SKlzksCqw18q7b8SJD/s1600/DSCN0479.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYGNpJhxj3Bn5ofLCwaygalMvKJOVlJluymgeEn6Nb_OJ9maXBRwv3AUpM-48IgXa2nw9ar-_DMVf0kg68I68d8VnOSykxtOrrJJwHlZ-RaOEcSHD6BSEXwSAZX2SKlzksCqw18q7b8SJD/s640/DSCN0479.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The quilted section I put on the inside with the knitted sleeve covering it. <br />The two layers are connected at the wristband and button only. The rest is left open. They fit so snugly together that I did not need to sew them into one piece completely.<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnSIruSJI5eMa0T804HH8h69VQf7OLMYZcT6MzIrcVyQ0LOjHy21sXFfq3560LklJK1l5CQuQhXGzveRg77sngpQu79qXA45HPtcjM3T3ont58JR_nEA-vgsygPIoA2JuQL-3-nP6bqYUh/s1600/DSCN0482.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnSIruSJI5eMa0T804HH8h69VQf7OLMYZcT6MzIrcVyQ0LOjHy21sXFfq3560LklJK1l5CQuQhXGzveRg77sngpQu79qXA45HPtcjM3T3ont58JR_nEA-vgsygPIoA2JuQL-3-nP6bqYUh/s640/DSCN0482.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">A picture to show the inside. The case (amazingly!) fits like a glove on the camera. :)<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvnpMrjLjY9tKyfESXXDvuJPTJ_IOXHt0uvPMzjman46WBlq0-AwPMq4GHcoEK6OOVvEkgtMJXSZAihyr0PMuGd-fqb1FCAvGw7K3UiWUpDLDH7_cOvOq7UURc8LCj70vKixM6E-8AS0V/s1600/DSCN0483.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsvnpMrjLjY9tKyfESXXDvuJPTJ_IOXHt0uvPMzjman46WBlq0-AwPMq4GHcoEK6OOVvEkgtMJXSZAihyr0PMuGd-fqb1FCAvGw7K3UiWUpDLDH7_cOvOq7UURc8LCj70vKixM6E-8AS0V/s640/DSCN0483.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /><br /><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The second project I completed this week was a dress for my first sister's doll, Felicity. I should mention that her Felicity doll is a mini one.<br />It was like sewing a dress for Thumbelina. ;)<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivGdw_AKAYGmTqksHWcShgwhyQC0GEebcXkyjNrTq4c2woy7mhnOTWKY3ebeXq0VTzq9lpGxsfyATlD8FLXa2do0ICc9hw-SHsjCVg5kHXgajZBaRh-Cpv4xYfOSI64FBs2-9LMKcrMUro/s1600/DSCN0551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivGdw_AKAYGmTqksHWcShgwhyQC0GEebcXkyjNrTq4c2woy7mhnOTWKY3ebeXq0VTzq9lpGxsfyATlD8FLXa2do0ICc9hw-SHsjCVg5kHXgajZBaRh-Cpv4xYfOSI64FBs2-9LMKcrMUro/s640/DSCN0551.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">First Sister was ecstatic with the results. Doesn't Felicity look cute?<br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">And yes, this is the second post this week with dolls in it. Hey, I'm a girl. I'm allowed. ;)</span></div>Elainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14066709486415366102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6687597552023301846.post-5181725645173317492012-07-18T08:58:00.001-05:002012-07-18T08:59:00.392-05:00Meet Me in St. Louis<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: red;">Warning: Excessive amount of doll pictures. If you are offended by an unusual number of dolls photographed, you might not want to read further. ;)</span><br />This Sunday my family and I went to St. Louis for the day. It is one of our favorite places to go because there are so many things to do in St. Louis for free that appeal to everyone.<br />This Sunday was an exception to that appeal for everyone, at least for a little while. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We went to the American Girl store.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0CPhy29oW38NDQ5hjEPUARaUfHSvq-wlNiBIJl_0ltM2yvv96NMKkZymnRwaUgoGI9WUHjrtdh4eC1jmurP7A0cWP0DX9YlRpgGd5pGwxI6PzBs4HTJp9su0siANU65dapJCel958vRF9/s1600/DSCN0486.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0CPhy29oW38NDQ5hjEPUARaUfHSvq-wlNiBIJl_0ltM2yvv96NMKkZymnRwaUgoGI9WUHjrtdh4eC1jmurP7A0cWP0DX9YlRpgGd5pGwxI6PzBs4HTJp9su0siANU65dapJCel958vRF9/s640/DSCN0486.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It was a true dream-come-true for myself and my younger sisters. :D<br /><br />The store opened in March of this year, and from what I can tell, it's been going great for AG. :)</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpCJEH0tchWaORIlDgGNtLAVq4PvLEYpggTHnrs_7MuRT5ShzZbuWsNTAzpEIP3hMIRrkXWMP4F15bSezsVQ59gPhRheA5pPai4Lxjbql5fyBy5O9RE2obFFRyPXtz6wIGNW1UFO3M03R-/s1600/DSCN0491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpCJEH0tchWaORIlDgGNtLAVq4PvLEYpggTHnrs_7MuRT5ShzZbuWsNTAzpEIP3hMIRrkXWMP4F15bSezsVQ59gPhRheA5pPai4Lxjbql5fyBy5O9RE2obFFRyPXtz6wIGNW1UFO3M03R-/s640/DSCN0491.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The amount of dolls in that store was stunning. They had dolls in the displays, underneath the displays, and on wall-to-wall shelves.<br />It was incredible!<br /><br />They even had armies of dolls! ;)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">They had the tiny weaving loom on display that I've seen in catalogues for years and always wondered what it looked like in real life.<br />It looks like it would be rather difficult to set up for a young girl, in my opinion.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">When I was 13, I received a mini Kaya doll for Christmas. I consequently made tepees out of chop sticks and brown fabric for Kaya. <span style="font-size: large;">After a while though, my dad and brothers were done with standing around awkwardly while we girls jumped up and down enthusiastically. I am so grateful that they waited patiently for us. <strike>I can imagine what it was like for them. </strike> They told us all the hardship and ridicule they received from other customers. All. The. <span style="font-size: large;">Today was a rare day. It was one of the very few days when my dad, my brother, and I were all off of work. Mom and Dad decided to go on a drive to nearby Horseshoe Lake in Illinois.<br />It had been a while since we had all gone out there, probably around six years.<br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The lake is more or less a small swamp, complete with cypress trees and stagnant water. ;)<br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">I mentioned in previous post that I am a part of a group studying "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." Early on it was suggested that someone from the group needed to find a recipe for <i>lembas</i> bread, or Elvish waybread. It is described in the book and shows up a few times in all the movie adaptations.<br />I found a recipe from <a href="http://www.briellecostumes.com/">Brielle's Costumes blog</a> some months ago and saved it to my computer.<br />Tonight, it was shared with the group. </span></div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgex6_dzHpJohWPKKU2x7OnXN6UX7JYIXsOnPZ1mi3f5RloGWJ8kXvtp-nnSL2dWxZKPZmXho7tlR1IS6ERNIpx2R3L9m3asx4eGRJLU59ZwhQ75s_MXePcBIx0eUtYnbakbrFIjZ9s4N8R/s1600/DSCN0410.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgex6_dzHpJohWPKKU2x7OnXN6UX7JYIXsOnPZ1mi3f5RloGWJ8kXvtp-nnSL2dWxZKPZmXho7tlR1IS6ERNIpx2R3L9m3asx4eGRJLU59ZwhQ75s_MXePcBIx0eUtYnbakbrFIjZ9s4N8R/s640/DSCN0410.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It is like shortbread, just like the recipe states. Very crumbly, buttery, and sweet. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL3au9jJ4vQvZZGbCBK8lzxUG39glZwSl1_4ElvMO8FrF6dp_IT59KO786gVMX4cmLByT-qr3cTLwSt5ICEOJdEwn7ry6P7uEJssWwhIed9iG75gKs-fLhButixu7elA1Jn8HFkgE1ourC/s1600/DSCN0411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL3au9jJ4vQvZZGbCBK8lzxUG39glZwSl1_4ElvMO8FrF6dp_IT59KO786gVMX4cmLByT-qr3cTLwSt5ICEOJdEwn7ry6P7uEJssWwhIed9iG75gKs-fLhButixu7elA1Jn8HFkgE1ourC/s640/DSCN0411.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You've noticed by now that I added leaves for effect. In the books, it is said that the bread was wrapped in elvish leaves, which kept the bread sweet.<br />Since Wal-Mart had no elvish leaves, I decided to go with the biggest leaves I could find, which were collared greens. :) It worked. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">As I look through old newspapers for my research job, sometimes I find interesting and odd pieces from the past.<br />Take, for instance, this editorial cartoon from the 1952 St. Louis <i>Post-Dispatch.</i></span></div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3SH3JzXgEjp3zDdHo5XL5cBeUr0at3BecJiWE3zV57JRPGCXrajGGZGD1uENprFDDO5-Y3fjKqJYzyXEreX4rcIIyHqWMel_GrAggZ9L5TsBNIdCZCCLXn3shvP1j-acOIW7jFA3-kFrl/s1600/Cartoon+of+Ford+Motors+St.+Louis+Post+Dispatch+1950s.tif.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3SH3JzXgEjp3zDdHo5XL5cBeUr0at3BecJiWE3zV57JRPGCXrajGGZGD1uENprFDDO5-Y3fjKqJYzyXEreX4rcIIyHqWMel_GrAggZ9L5TsBNIdCZCCLXn3shvP1j-acOIW7jFA3-kFrl/s640/Cartoon+of+Ford+Motors+St.+Louis+Post+Dispatch+1950s.tif.jpg" width="566" /></a><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />With all the various shapes and sizes of the cars we see today, this gives a funny look at what it was like so early on in car history. Well, at least in Ford's history. ;)<br /><br />At any rate, I recommend you look through your local newspaper's archives, if they are available. They provide fascinating insight to life at any given point in history as far back as the newspaper goes. <br /><br />God Bless!</span><br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Good evening, everyone.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I know that I have been very irregular in my posting. I decided to post tonight before the craziness of this work week begins. I simply do not have the time during the week. If I do, I'm usually catching up on my reading.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Which leads me to my first topic.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I have just finished re-reading, "The Scarlet Pimpernel" for only the second time. Shameful, I know. I forgot just how wonderfully romantic that book is. The way that Marguerite and Sir Percy are so far apart in the beginning of the book reminds me so much of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's relationship for a good part of "Pride and Prejudice." (Which reminds me, I really need to re-read that book, too.)</span>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Anyway, now I'm reading a biography of Voltaire and his relationship with Emilie du Chatelet. It's an interesting book, although one can learn too much about historical figures. One piece that I found intriguing was the fact that actresses in the 18th century were considered outcasts. I realized then that if Sir Percy were a real person/aristocrat, then there would have been no way that he would have married Marguerite St. Just, an actress. It would have been (gasp!) beneath him. You can conjecture for yourself then that if Sir Percy was a real person that he would have married her for love and would have foregone all rules of class and aristocracy or would not have married her at all. Personally (and I think I speak for all die-hard TSP fans) that he would have been the former, not the latter.<br />(I'm probably going to be slammed for this.;)</span><span style="font-size: large;">Moving on.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I bought two books at Barnes and Noble today: "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "North and South." The first one is more or less stocking up for future reference, but the second one is definitely for enjoyment. Ever since I watched the 2004 miniseries version of "North and South," I have been wanting very badly to read the book. I mean, who doesn't want to read about John Thorton? ;)</span>

<span style="font-size: large;">First, the weather.<br />That's usually a good conversation starter.<br />Here is a picture of the environment currently.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Bone. Dry. <br />And not just dry, but also extremely hot. We hope and pray that this will end soon. It has to end soon.<br /><br />My life has been pretty filled to the brim lately. I'm almost as busy now as I am during the school year, minus homework. I've been juggling five part-time jobs plus a fragment of a life. ;) It's been difficult, but it's not without its joys and rewards. I gave a short speech at a bicentennial last Sunday in honor of my hometown's founder. Besides speaking in front of 120 people (gulp!) it was actually rather fun. I got to dress up and act as our founder's wife! Secretly (not so much anymore I guess) I've always wanted to act, but I'm not usually one to stand up in front of people and talk. I'm not going to lie; it was very nerve-racking. My hands were shaking and I didn't speak quite as loudly as I could have. But that's okay. The whole commemoration went on very well, which is the important thing.<br /><br />In between house cleaning, research, babysitting, and docenting (is that a word?) I've been attempting to do some fun things as well. I received a bunch of leftover yarn from a friend of mine which I have organized into two three-drawer containers. My yarn storage is much more appealing than it was! I can't wait to knit up all the ideas that I have in my head right now, especially one in particular. But that will have to wait. :)<br /><br />For now, I have this to show you. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Tissue-paper covered jars. Oh. Yeah.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The girl I babysit is eight years old so we've been doing different craft projects. Some of you might remember "Molly's Craft Book" from American Girl. We had a blast with with the tissue-paper covered jars. It's practically free, since all you need are leftover jars, colored tissue paper, and glue.<br />I found out the other day that the big jar I have is perfect for holding the small yarn balls I have recently been knitting with. It won't tip over, the yarn stays nice and clean, plus I don't have to constantly unwind the ball of yarn. A simple tool, but sometimes those are the best. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Until next time my friends. :)</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">On Wednesday, I went with my dad and brothers on a bike trail called Tunnel Hill Trail. The trail is about an hour's drive away from our house. We left as early as we could to take advantage of the cooler morning air. <br /><br />The trail was quite lovely, but before I can show you just how beautiful it is, I must first show you how much work went into it.<br /> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifyxkW4-O3vOQqJoZovOmBFQp9lwracBPumxki1x5pfJuNKwdZb3BnL95qSKBti8PIOJneROaU6eGBaPRRKHFKWkm-swsUF12oVSDNgano7Vjv2Dw6aaY_AXxRw5Puhfaa_kIha1lsyFFX/s1600/DSCN0334.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifyxkW4-O3vOQqJoZovOmBFQp9lwracBPumxki1x5pfJuNKwdZb3BnL95qSKBti8PIOJneROaU6eGBaPRRKHFKWkm-swsUF12oVSDNgano7Vjv2Dw6aaY_AXxRw5Puhfaa_kIha1lsyFFX/s640/DSCN0334.JPG" width="640" /></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Yes, five bikes and a large water cooler were packed into the back of my family's 12-passenger van. It worked out quite nicely. You can tell that Dad has done this kind of thing before. ;)<br /><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The evening before the ride, shortly after we made the plans, I decided that I needed a new bike. The one I rode before I've had for about eight years and was in rough shape. That, and I wanted one that fits my personality. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I found this. I knew without a doubt that this was indeed my new bicycle. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6JsHN5fO6W1usGRjfv-F5SSVH12Hv7HaW7ezkje7FQrpqkZEEimqiEuL_01l_G-1MfzNncpmUTx6DaRpVJ6KhgoD5mEhi44bkOYBmxphnfmpETV3JbrCx_2GRV94nj_v00C0DHpnweMbq/s1600/My+Bike.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6JsHN5fO6W1usGRjfv-F5SSVH12Hv7HaW7ezkje7FQrpqkZEEimqiEuL_01l_G-1MfzNncpmUTx6DaRpVJ6KhgoD5mEhi44bkOYBmxphnfmpETV3JbrCx_2GRV94nj_v00C0DHpnweMbq/s640/My+Bike.jpg" width="537" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The ride itself was nice. We got there at about eight in the morning, so everything was still fresh and new. My brothers spotted several deer (they were farther ahead than I was at that point). The first one they saw was a doe. <br /><br />Then all of a sudden, a tiny, long-legged creature came out of nowhere:</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGRx9b6CzcBoVOvEVmdyzrLdXWLA8AVOAE3_ljtuEHED0ZtIIfelR46j5WCUKC0jNxY_39tc0k21OsP_ZGJ0p4Aq3p0HOIztyIQPtEPBwZSbFfdWpxMPxuPwoX7_1m5bztTOCYlnmV7x2L/s1600/DSCN0337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGRx9b6CzcBoVOvEVmdyzrLdXWLA8AVOAE3_ljtuEHED0ZtIIfelR46j5WCUKC0jNxY_39tc0k21OsP_ZGJ0p4Aq3p0HOIztyIQPtEPBwZSbFfdWpxMPxuPwoX7_1m5bztTOCYlnmV7x2L/s640/DSCN0337.JPG" width="640" /></a><br /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large;">It was a fawn! </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;">It was amazing to see such a small animal with such energy!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Fawns are so adorable.<br /></span></div>
</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large;">A few miles later, Brother #3 stopped short on the trail. He apparently had just barely missed a turtle. </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Dad picked up the little guy, who quickly receded into his shell. </span></div>
</span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">You can see just how tiny he was. I think he was a small snapping turtle, but I'm not sure.<br /><br />Here are some pictures of the trail itself. It was nice and shady for a good part of the ride. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQkE4qeKN1FKBuuCtQh0UU5g-Ggf8GOHEx5uvT__svI02jkspV3QU4CgWcuM2o8lADIqKSK6CNLbqIInLmDy4QBag2sljozYk9CnS27nbjvQoCmnOnfE7UT-q73qVEIMtibuj-H6YwWOxJ/s1600/DSCN0341.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQkE4qeKN1FKBuuCtQh0UU5g-Ggf8GOHEx5uvT__svI02jkspV3QU4CgWcuM2o8lADIqKSK6CNLbqIInLmDy4QBag2sljozYk9CnS27nbjvQoCmnOnfE7UT-q73qVEIMtibuj-H6YwWOxJ/s640/DSCN0341.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I forgot to mention earlier that this trail was originally a railroad. There are several trestle bridges, with this one being the largest.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxzLzkLhrdOG7Pqym09nQjHVozPkaoHWcZo09DCh8MCNvlhu8Lww4DkCv1mARsFPNkyvOQSpevfalpjZzpAs4cuFmpi8DNnaFlBp9KK-tmaDgm3Xbh8uG-1PWn8L4j4Xd14BHecikcOLB/s1600/DSCN0343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlxzLzkLhrdOG7Pqym09nQjHVozPkaoHWcZo09DCh8MCNvlhu8Lww4DkCv1mARsFPNkyvOQSpevfalpjZzpAs4cuFmpi8DNnaFlBp9KK-tmaDgm3Xbh8uG-1PWn8L4j4Xd14BHecikcOLB/s640/DSCN0343.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We were up pretty high!</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorKGAKima3Pf9QNCtUQnin-CiYcgkbB3_gO6Q_yxLcPYMFtkPGA9enh5Oq_Wd3301ihChD5H6iqKC3If2bnNX1RTrqy4my0BNzTW-xr6DwoC-sYGbg3V2mKa0jAFGBHVjEwtT8UGRTgrW/s1600/DSCN0342.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjorKGAKima3Pf9QNCtUQnin-CiYcgkbB3_gO6Q_yxLcPYMFtkPGA9enh5Oq_Wd3301ihChD5H6iqKC3If2bnNX1RTrqy4my0BNzTW-xr6DwoC-sYGbg3V2mKa0jAFGBHVjEwtT8UGRTgrW/s640/DSCN0342.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We came to the end shortly after we went through the longest tunnel. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWifKKpVNgEnoxxwbZZDCyL0YsxTuV3N5SBxYHw8Om5BzZcNZlF-VADjsOoJxd0f-dudVu9a9X9Nu9xZeobZ7lLcxJFCbU7XppQkDRLzEuJJcry7C9kkrtMxGH9RbQT_uLHMn-8NCvesDc/s1600/DSCN0349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWifKKpVNgEnoxxwbZZDCyL0YsxTuV3N5SBxYHw8Om5BzZcNZlF-VADjsOoJxd0f-dudVu9a9X9Nu9xZeobZ7lLcxJFCbU7XppQkDRLzEuJJcry7C9kkrtMxGH9RbQT_uLHMn-8NCvesDc/s640/DSCN0349.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br />I meant to take pictures <i>inside</i> the tunnel, but the first time we went through it took all my strength just to get through it. That, and it was <i>really </i>dark in the middle. I took video when we went through it the second time, but it was pretty shaky.<br />So, this is pretty much all I have of the tunnel itself:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0aDmrynhWpck4yyIujwyBEaSgIf5HnlHCwPNNlEv9eehSpzhpx1_68h7-iI_e9vmzJYaWDnmf_Xy3UtZ9vQoCZwfPdSQvpckXHhyphenhyphenK4Ww6sfp8WMlpImkPHADkXFO97Ch8qtpSUtzbI1Rl/s1600/DSCN0362.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0aDmrynhWpck4yyIujwyBEaSgIf5HnlHCwPNNlEv9eehSpzhpx1_68h7-iI_e9vmzJYaWDnmf_Xy3UtZ9vQoCZwfPdSQvpckXHhyphenhyphenK4Ww6sfp8WMlpImkPHADkXFO97Ch8qtpSUtzbI1Rl/s640/DSCN0362.JPG" width="640" /></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Not bad for taking the picture over my shoulder while riding away from the tunnel, eh? ;)<br /><br />The trail was longer than any I have ever covered before. It was ten miles one way, up a slight grade. It was an endurance run, that is for sure.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJjyaWSwCygO1Vj-EjMunLy1QXrHiR48dBHEpFVg_2QwBckgT5-3xwGBc_fOnncq9kMtS_O-KfAsnpWayWgvVsGt2C2Htlb_Ietkf9JHsYTYGIQ69J9Q_a_-nIS5gM7-u15JeQQDIsHUX/s1600/DSCN0365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJjyaWSwCygO1Vj-EjMunLy1QXrHiR48dBHEpFVg_2QwBckgT5-3xwGBc_fOnncq9kMtS_O-KfAsnpWayWgvVsGt2C2Htlb_Ietkf9JHsYTYGIQ69J9Q_a_-nIS5gM7-u15JeQQDIsHUX/s640/DSCN0365.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">But it was worth it.<br /><br /><br />J.M.J.</span></div>Elainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14066709486415366102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6687597552023301846.post-10849260326720031722012-06-17T13:56:00.002-05:002012-06-17T13:57:04.067-05:00A Hobbes for my Dad.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghU-iN0Q9hty6h-IVHCn6PaivheTyUfeMqJffVUodgT1KPZvyNQHJ6rY9z4msUls8bjyhKsP4cVXWV_oGgrI6BlVx8G5Fo8kIf3Iu8hhMfxkF-4v-d5JIIByDaQeQfLjWwgS02Nv25uzmH/s1600/Calvin+and+Hobbes+strip+1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghU-iN0Q9hty6h-IVHCn6PaivheTyUfeMqJffVUodgT1KPZvyNQHJ6rY9z4msUls8bjyhKsP4cVXWV_oGgrI6BlVx8G5Fo8kIf3Iu8hhMfxkF-4v-d5JIIByDaQeQfLjWwgS02Nv25uzmH/s640/Calvin+and+Hobbes+strip+1.gif" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So for quite some time now, my dad has been asking me to make him a stuffed Hobbes. Hobbes was one of the main characters in the comic strip <i>Calvin and Hobbes</i> that appeared from the mid 80's to the mid 90's or so. To all unsuspecting humans, Hobbes looks like an ordinary stuffed tiger. To Calvin though, Hobbes is alive and real like any other person.<br /><br />Dad showed me an <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Stuffed-Hobbes-with-pattern/">Instructables pattern</a> gives step-by-step instructions on how to make your own Hobbes. It is a great tutorial, very thorough and chock-full of pictures. I printed out the pattern and began work.<br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjApNOmhEgaSMuh145p6cEeIAfCS-QDsFenCC0IhyphenhyphenXKipO68YpAaS-MSjdo53LW-ALWOwcpXzkbEAyk5Xm7AdNMb1pf9T1yy38Mh_XaUQkKuCeMW0rttrx0yrpCnPD7QO5J3wwwbvos56IC/s1600/DSCN0299.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjApNOmhEgaSMuh145p6cEeIAfCS-QDsFenCC0IhyphenhyphenXKipO68YpAaS-MSjdo53LW-ALWOwcpXzkbEAyk5Xm7AdNMb1pf9T1yy38Mh_XaUQkKuCeMW0rttrx0yrpCnPD7QO5J3wwwbvos56IC/s640/DSCN0299.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The pattern didn't list any specific yardage for the fabric, so I guessed about half a yard each of orange, black, and white. I used smooth broadcloth instead of fleece so that it would last longer and look better. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQTF6vF8su4vACGqaaun-yk8opxi6yR6MssLf-f8L47IWTPyAaac2ya2xDwYyxmufoLwPKs72vyb_DDp-TWhQ9ASfQRGejXGhHrrukFef_az1s7x_l3VwxZArtjmyfZSm8c-amdS-1GVX/s1600/DSCN0300.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirQTF6vF8su4vACGqaaun-yk8opxi6yR6MssLf-f8L47IWTPyAaac2ya2xDwYyxmufoLwPKs72vyb_DDp-TWhQ9ASfQRGejXGhHrrukFef_az1s7x_l3VwxZArtjmyfZSm8c-amdS-1GVX/s640/DSCN0300.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The first thing I sewed was the tummy with my sewing machine. I sewed as much as I could with the machine, because I had a lot of hand sewing to do.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I also put some beads in the end of the tail to weigh it down. The tail actually became quite useful in the end, because it helps balance Hobbes so he can sit up. </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg5FIpHkPsTcUsr_vzpd2fdJc896V8MO9uis17MP-JWlgnpYipeJ9j507n82mK9v_VN3czEkfgH5xtSUJ5P2dePGE-blU4XSQK8OpUdKql5TmW95itjXfK9ONt_AW6lziqDsGMB2v66OuY/s1600/DSCN0301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg5FIpHkPsTcUsr_vzpd2fdJc896V8MO9uis17MP-JWlgnpYipeJ9j507n82mK9v_VN3czEkfgH5xtSUJ5P2dePGE-blU4XSQK8OpUdKql5TmW95itjXfK9ONt_AW6lziqDsGMB2v66OuY/s640/DSCN0301.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Here he is all laid out before I sewed on the appendages. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">In fact, that picture kinda reminds me of this <i>Calvin and Hobbes</i> strip, one of my personal favorites:</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">For the first nineteen years of my life, I read and enjoyed reading.<br />Now that I have entered college, however, that enjoyment has ended.<br />College has ruined the way I read.<br /><br />Let me explain:<br />When one is taking five three-hour classes, it is next to impossible to have any reading time between class, homework, and work. It is extremely difficult to read continually, because the time allotted for reading is often hurried and short. One cannot remember enough of the previously read pages to continue reading. This is because there have been a million other things passing in and out of one's head since the last time the book was picked up.<br /><br /> I'm not just talking about reading for enjoyment. One would think that textbooks are there <i>to be read, </i>but in my limited experience, this is sometimes hardly necessary at all. I ask you, why have the textbooks, if one does not have to read them?<br />If one does read the readings for class, it is often in a hurried and harried manner, and leads to the necessity of taking notes.<br />This lead me to my next grievance.<br /><br /><br />Taking notes is a recent problem I have developed. I have borrowed several history books from the university library to prepare for the fall semester. In order to remember everything, it has been suggested to me that I should take notes as I read. <br /><br />This, my friends, is the most devastating problem of what college has done to me.<br /><br />I can no longer just read a book. No. I must now learn something from it. Gone are the days of passive reading, of reading for no purpose at all. Gone are the days of happily and foolishly reading simply for its own sake. Gone are the days of reading, "Little House on the Prairie" series simply "for fun. Now I must figure out the characters' motives, the author's thesis, and why in the world Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in the first place.<br /><br />I must (sob!) <i>actively read</i>.<br /><br />This summer, I have joined a study group for "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. There too are we encouraged to think outside the box, to understand in some small part what the author might be conveying to us, and to (gasp!)<i> take notes.</i><br /><br />Most intolerable.<br /><br /><br />But lest my friends of the Fellowship think I do not like them or the purpose of our study, let me say this:<br /><br /><i>I would not have it any other way. </i><br />I love diving deeper into books. I can no longer just read them. I want to understand why characters act the way they do, what the setting of the story is, and what the author is trying to tell us. For if one person thought it was worthwhile to write an entire book on a single subject, it is worthwhile for us readers to delve a bit deeper into it. <br /> </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">To actively read is to take part in any book.<br />This is one of the great lessons that college has taught me. Reading for class does not always have to be a drag, but neither does the book I read last week need to be forgotten. <br />Read to learn.<br /><br /><br />"I can't imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once." ~C.S. Lewis</span></div>Elainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14066709486415366102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6687597552023301846.post-40835649756043144102012-06-06T22:25:00.000-05:002012-06-08T07:45:40.920-05:0018th Century Pockets!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">A really long time ago, before there were such things as Levi's Jeans, there were pockets. In the eighteenth century (and probably before), women wore pockets underneath their skirts. Their skirts had slits on the side that made it easy to reach their pockets. The pockets were separate from their dresses, and were tied around the waist.<br />I decided to make my own pockets this past weekend. I work as a docent (history enthusiast who gives tours at historic places). The house I work at is actually an interpretive center that is a replica of a house built around 1795.<br /><br />Here are a set of pockets in the process of being put together.</span></div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEGcZnj373QrbiTr_TAN_gr7bqOlzemSQjQaYOkDm3Keqm-DILWOtwr54Y0duO3aUkLp4UqqgIL5o52tOb8FxHoxbRLqN7AoYE_d9ijPWoR-wNiOoMRXxpxr84aWstg_joG0WG4tRWsPk/s1600/DSCN0256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicEGcZnj373QrbiTr_TAN_gr7bqOlzemSQjQaYOkDm3Keqm-DILWOtwr54Y0duO3aUkLp4UqqgIL5o52tOb8FxHoxbRLqN7AoYE_d9ijPWoR-wNiOoMRXxpxr84aWstg_joG0WG4tRWsPk/s640/DSCN0256.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This pocket is more of a work-in-progress. I lined the front part of the pocket so that the slit would look nice. Here it is from the inside.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Some people insist that they were worn on the outside of the skirt, but I beg to differ. <span style="font-size: large;">Yesterday, June 5th, was a momentous day in astronomy history. Venus, the brightest planet (often seen as a bright "star" on the horizon in the evening) made a special appearance.<br />For seven hours, she stood between us and the Sun, casting her infinitesimal shadow on Earth.<br />I had to take a picture. ;)</span></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBl-j1rXcmuf7zAYjRdYXf6YGY6pv5tGTGVU8kYSkiw9iTIQfqN-7KQhhG0SrKDd31rh3lg08S12W-7n-ith_6wTiXNKxjgZQjFS_JV4RfQ9vVmfIc-FuI5sE8HYxg9YZCJiyKupGKFwqi/s1600/DSCN0270.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBl-j1rXcmuf7zAYjRdYXf6YGY6pv5tGTGVU8kYSkiw9iTIQfqN-7KQhhG0SrKDd31rh3lg08S12W-7n-ith_6wTiXNKxjgZQjFS_JV4RfQ9vVmfIc-FuI5sE8HYxg9YZCJiyKupGKFwqi/s640/DSCN0270.JPG" width="480" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Venus can be seen on the lower right-hand corner of the Sun's image.<br />On this next picture, the top two arrow are pointing to barely-seen sunspots, and the lowest one is pointing to Venus' shadow. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLZlr3OvaEAO7z5Wktx8lOaaxib-xVUJIsS6fGj3thoWvS0YyZQAQFZ5owkNhUeTc2757zR-Yz-oJN64VSKzErMrs1KKb0qJOeoxN7VhIN0pHbg271CTtT3nFx5iD_BqpzJ7Ub829Z17ZM/s1600/Transit+of+Venus+with+arrows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLZlr3OvaEAO7z5Wktx8lOaaxib-xVUJIsS6fGj3thoWvS0YyZQAQFZ5owkNhUeTc2757zR-Yz-oJN64VSKzErMrs1KKb0qJOeoxN7VhIN0pHbg271CTtT3nFx5iD_BqpzJ7Ub829Z17ZM/s640/Transit+of+Venus+with+arrows.jpg" width="516" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">How did I get such pictures, you ask? Well my brother found instructions to take a pair of binoculars and set them on a tripod. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKCAmI2ph652_tsoUN4-vScFRtBeQOHOSwIjZjaONUZQPVqdaakjE8VcP6iMB2MVgmuw95GOhhxo4D_0MGXz5mEdpRm1wIT6k3NO8IbwaSIN6wIVS2OS76vTEU3H9fKXN5ysJLIAt8hbl9/s1600/DSCN0280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKCAmI2ph652_tsoUN4-vScFRtBeQOHOSwIjZjaONUZQPVqdaakjE8VcP6iMB2MVgmuw95GOhhxo4D_0MGXz5mEdpRm1wIT6k3NO8IbwaSIN6wIVS2OS76vTEU3H9fKXN5ysJLIAt8hbl9/s640/DSCN0280.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The binoculars shrink the image of the Sun, making it possible to view Venus' crossing on a piece of paper. The cardboard is to shade the area around the binoculars so that it's easier to see the Sun on the paper. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">A few days ago, I received a bunch of old certificates and posters from a friend of mine. Some of them are quite old: the oldest dating back to 1907! As you can imagine, it is a pleasure to have such old pieces. The pieces were apparently rolled up for some time, so I had to weigh the top and bottom of each piece down so that I could take a picture.<br />The first two pictures are of a First Communion certificate from 1907. If you look closely, the certificate is in German. Most people in my neck of the woods are of German descent, including myself. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The certificate is pretty rough around the edges (literally), but the colors are still vibrant and the gold embossing shows up nicely.<br />Here is a close up of the German words. Pretty cool, eh? The small picture on the left is an angel staying the hand of Abraham to prevent him from sacrificing Isaac. On the right looks like a depiction of the early Church during the holy sacrifice of the Mass.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">With a few exceptions, the certificates were the only ones that had dates on them. Figuring out the dates for every one will take some time. I will have to do some research online using publishers' names. Hopefully I can find something!<br /><br /> This Last Supper poster is much smaller in comparison. The artist's name is Schmidt, a German name if ever there was one. ;)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This is a scene from one of my favorite Bible stories. It's a relief to know that even St. Peter had problems trusting God. ;)<br />The sides of the poster look warped. This is because the poster curves inward from being rolled up.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br />It was fun to play archivist this afternoon. I'm not sure how I'm going to fix the curled-edge problem. <span style="font-size: large;">I have made it a tradition to make each of my brothers and sisters a quilt for their thirteenth birthday. I am on the third (and last!) brother at this point. When I asked him what color he wanted for his quilt, he said that he wanted it all red. I flinched at this idea. I mean, have you ever seen a red quilt? ;) The color would be a bit too much, never mind the fact that it would take forever to find fabric the same shade of red. ;)<br />So I decided that I would give my aunt a call. She helped me think of other ways to express my brother's personality, but without the fiery color scheme.<br /><br /><br />This is what I came up with.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjci-xQGDa0d_QirXOPyz3TrIp-ADBxpPm9l9K2J7WgA-TskMaGSRsRq_ZgvCO8mcKp11HuIC0JlnozS6_cu_nbD_OLNiUNxOtRNe-XCzTrHOwgM02qR4EirfdM4UjgdchDXRQmbTIFw1ez/s1600/DSCN0243.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjci-xQGDa0d_QirXOPyz3TrIp-ADBxpPm9l9K2J7WgA-TskMaGSRsRq_ZgvCO8mcKp11HuIC0JlnozS6_cu_nbD_OLNiUNxOtRNe-XCzTrHOwgM02qR4EirfdM4UjgdchDXRQmbTIFw1ez/s320/DSCN0243.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I drew two designs with Captain America (my brother's favorite superhero/Avenger) in mind. The one on the bottom is the design I went with. If you use your imagination, it looks like the Cap's famous shield. <br /><br />Fast forward a week or so. This is what I had this morning. My grandma told me about a specific kind of quilting about a year ago. The idea is to sew medium-size blocks separately. The quilt top is not sewn together until later. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzT6uptYnXUR7C-VaGaI98AjLaC8X_277gE-vxuho2t7OTjVzQ3mCsns0jBOXonubWxHi59Rhiqny9rgoHOgRziIX_XT3Jn1bZXqUwmPVOUbE7dgTtIrlXOdbijJgLwA3iwsaWnQaKPtN_/s1600/DSCN0221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzT6uptYnXUR7C-VaGaI98AjLaC8X_277gE-vxuho2t7OTjVzQ3mCsns0jBOXonubWxHi59Rhiqny9rgoHOgRziIX_XT3Jn1bZXqUwmPVOUbE7dgTtIrlXOdbijJgLwA3iwsaWnQaKPtN_/s320/DSCN0221.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I sewed the quilt top in four blocks. I then cut the batting to fit the block. The backing was cut slightly <i>larger </i>( you'll see why this is important in a minute)<i>. </i>Here is a picture of the layers. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">After the pieces are cut and pinned together, they can be machine quilted. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I try as best I can to make sure the pieces are all even, but it doesn't always turn out perfectly. :S </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Another important thing to remember is to not machine quilt from edge to edge. You must leave about an inch at the beginning and the end, as you can see here:</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">So I decided that I needed to make a "proper" dress at least once this summer. I wanted a vintage look, so I took out my Simplicity pattern (the one on the right). I've had this pattern for probably a couple of years. I think I bought it when Hobby Lobby had a sale, so this pattern cost about two dollars.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Here is one section of the skirt. I laid out the fabric and pattern on the ironing board to mark the darts. There were a total of TWELVE darts on the skirt sections alone! </span>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Count 'em. Twelve! </td></tr>

<span style="font-size: large;"> Needless to say, darts are tedious things and not my favorite technique in sewing. However, they are slightly better than pleats, which I absolutely abhor. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I used the pattern on the left to make sleeves. I figured it would be cooler if I didn't have to wear a blouse underneath a sleeveless dress. I tried to be creative with my sleeves, but it didn't work. I wanted to gather them and put cute little buttons on the side. However, the binding I made wasn't long enough and it didn't fit my arm. So I trimmed the sleeves.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bad angle. Sorry.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The odd angle of this picture is a result of me trying to hide how very messy my room was at this point. Having an ironing board in my room didn't help matters much either. ;) Anyway, this is the front bodice. The bodice was empire waist style. After I had most of the dress completed, I discovered that the neckline was much too wide. I decided to add yet more darts to the front and back of the neckline, as you can see from the pictures below.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The fabric for this dress was on sale at Hancock Fabrics. I paid a grand total of $9.37, minus the patterns and zipper I had stocked up. :) </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Pictures of the whole dress to come later!</span><br />
